Your Home Looking Dated? Here’s How to Make It Feel Like New Again

Buying furniture for a new house is something most homeowners look forward to. But after a few years of wear and tear, all your furniture and fixtures start looking dated, and your home starts looking like something out of an old movie. While many people like the dated look, others don’t, and with the amount of time we’re spending indoors, comfort and cleanliness should be the top priority.

If you’re looking to keep your house in tip-top shape and want to make it feel new again, here’s how you can do so.

Table of Contents

  • Spruce Up Your Carpets
  • Upgrade Old Fixtures, Handles, and Doorknobs
  • Check on Heating and Cooling
  • Change Your Bulbs and Add a New Light or Two
  • Repaint Old Cabinets and Drawers

Spruce Up Your Carpets

One of the main parts of a home that can make it look older is the carpet. Vacuuming your carpet regularly a great way to get rid of dust, but when you can barely even remember how those stains got there, it may be time for a deep clean. Be your own professional cleaning service by taking a mop and some heavy-duty cleaning solution, and your carpet will look as good as new. However, if your carpet has rips, tears, and stains that can’t be removed, you might want to consider replacing it instead.

It’s also important to clean up any stains as soon as possible, no matter what kind of furniture you have. This will give the stain less time to soak in the cloth or wood and make it easier to remove.

If you don’t want to deal with constantly replacing your carpeting every few years and you have wooden flooring under it, you might want to keep it that way and add smaller carpets to give your house a new look. Even small changes like these can make a big difference in renewing the feel of your old home.

Upgrade Old Fixtures, Handles, and Doorknobs

Rusted faucets, handles, doorknobs, and yellowing fixtures may not seem like a big deal, but they can easily tell you just how old your space is getting. If they’re on the brink of breaking down or falling apart, replacing them is the best option. On the other hand, if they aren’t due for a replacement just yet, you can improve how they look by taking the time to clean and polish them. Cleaning your fixtures, handles, and even your appliances can not only make your home look cleaner but it can also make it feel newer.

Check on Heating and Cooling

This step is crucial if you live in an area that experiences extreme weather. If you feel like your heating and cooling system is starting to give off a weird smell or doesn’t heat or cool your home evenly, you may want to have it checked. It may be time to have your system replaced. Otherwise, it’s important to have your HVAC system serviced regularly and get your filters replaced, especially in the fall and spring. Maintaining your HVAC system will help you make sure you don’t come across any problems during the summer and winter months.

Change Your Bulbs and Add a New Light or Two

In horror movies, dim lights often mean something bad is about to happen, and you don’t want to have that feeling in your home. While it may not sound that important, regularly replacing your light bulbs can not only help your house look brighter and newer, it can also make your house seem bigger. This is especially true if you also have light-colored walls because it makes your space seem more open and airy. Never underestimate the way new lighting renews the look and feel of a house.

Repaint Old Cabinets and Drawers

Cabinets and drawers can last a long time if maintained properly, but if you’re starting to see some wear and tear, don’t throw them out just yet. Instead, repaint them and give your kitchen a mini-makeover. Just remember to clean, repair, and sand off your drawers and cabinets before applying a fresh coat of paint.

It’s important to remember that small changes can make a big difference, which applies to all aspects of our lives. When it comes to giving your home a refresh, there’s no better time than now to start doing so. Ensuring that you live in a home that satisfies you and makes you feel comfortable and safe is more important than ever, especially during these uncertain times. With a little elbow grease, tools, cleaning materials, and these tips, not only will you make your home feel like new again, but you’ll also create a space that you truly enjoy living in.
