What are the different types of pool filter?
Sand filter
When the water enters a sand filter, it pushes it through a tank which is full of fine sand. This sand is what removes the impurities from the water as the water moves through it due to the rough edges of the sand. To maintain your sand filter, you need backwash at least monthly to remove debris from the system and this will likely need to be increased in the warmer weather. Over time, the sand eventually becomes smooth from the friction of the water and needs replacing.
Sand filters are a popular option because they’re low cost and easy to maintain as the sand only needs to be replaced every few years. However, they do use a bit of water with the backwashing process and are less effective at filtering compared to cartridge filters.
Cartridge filter
Cartridge filters remove impurities from the water as dirt and debris becomes trapped in the polyester pleats of the filter cartridge. To clean your cartridge filter, you simply need to remove your cartridge from the filtration system once it has built up debris and dirt and gently hose it off. For more stubborn dirt, you can also soak the cartridge. When cleaning the cartridge, check the cartridge for ripped or damaged pleats or broken end caps as these are signs that the cartridge needs replacing.
Cartridge filters are able to filter very small particles out of the water and don’t use water like sand filters do. However, they require more maintenance than a sand filter as they need to be cleaned out frequently and the cartridges need to be replaced more often than the sand media.
How do I know what size pool filter I need?
When you’re in the market for a new pool filter, you need to ensure that you get the right size so your filter can handle the volume of water that will flow through it each day. You need to calculate the volume of your pool as well as how long it takes for the water to completely cycle through the filter.
