What is Door Glazing?

Door glazing is one old tradition that is still in practice to date. It may seem like a difficult job, but trust that you can do this on your own when you are ready to get your hands off the pocket. You may not need an expert to do door glazing for you.

Glazing is one antique process that will add design and beauty to your door and make your home look beautiful. This process leaves color on the pores, crevices, and nooks to the door wood to stimulate gentle aging. As a homeowner, you will come to realize that door glazing is simple and less costly.

These are the steps you should follow if you want to glaze your door and make it look appealing to your visitors.

Step # 1: Take Off The Door

The first step to follow is removing the door off the hinges. You can do this by inserting a screwdriver into the bottom of the hinge and hitting it with a hammer.

Place the tip of the screwdriver under the head of the pin once it pops up half-inch above the top of the hinge. Keep tapping the screwdriver until the pin is out of the hinge. Repeat this process with the remaining hinges to remove the door.

Step #2: Lay The Door Flat On A Sawhorses

The second thing to do is laying the door on a couple of sawhorses. To achieve this, you have to tear off the masking tape and take over the door knocker, kick plate, and other hardware. This step should not consume much of your time.

Step #3: Sand The Door

Take sandpaper and use it for sanding your door to roughen up the wood and create a smooth texture. This will allow the glaze you apply on the door to stick easily. Get a damp rag and use it to wipe down all the dust created on the sanding. You want to repeat the sanding process until you can no longer see the gloss from the previous sealer.

Step #4: Apply The Glaze

In this step, you should wear some gloves and apply some amount of glaze on the door's surface with a clean brush. Start from one corner of the door and proceed from side to side on the opposite corner. You can poke the brush into the edges of the glazing door with raised panels.

Step #5: Wipe The Glaze When It Is Getting Dull

When you notice the glaze starts to get dull, you can use a dry rag to wipe it off. To remove the excess glaze, you should wipe with the grain and against the grain. Wipe on the flat areas of the door to work the glaze into the various pores of the wood. To achieve a more antique look, you should allow more glaze to remain in the crevices. How much glaze you leave depends on your personal preferences.

Step #6: Brush Once the Glaze Has Dried

Once the glaze has dried, you can now brush on a polyurethane sealer. It takes between two and five hours to dry, depending on the humidity and temperature of the place. When brushing, you should go with the grain of the wood and use a long stroke if you can.

Allow your door to dry up for the next 24 hours before you can repeat this process with the other side of the door. Finally, you can remove the tape and re-hang your door for that amazing look.

Final Thoughts

Glazing a door should not be as difficult as you think. If you want to make your door look amazing, you can follow the steps outlined here to glaze it. Always ensure you get the right tools and materials when glazing your door. Give the glaze time to dry up and get some good results at the end.
