Things to Consider when Buying Acoustic Panels

Acoustic panels help absorb noise in a room and reduce the echoes and reverberations in a room. Acoustic panels come in different shapes, sizes, and colors; it is necessary to ensure that you are careful when choosing acoustic panels to match your interior design. Moreover, for soundproofing purposes, one needs to get panels that will be effective from the very beginning. Therefore, you need to know how to pick the best sound absorption panels before you go out and buy the first pack you see. This is because if you buy the wrong or fake ones, you may be needed to go back to shop again. Therefore being aware of things to choose from will save you lots of time and money.

Listed below are some of the things to consider when buying acoustic panels

Table of Contents

  • Consider the Thickness of the Panel
  • Consider the Pattern for Surface Sculpture
  • Check the NRC Rating; Noise Reduction Coefficient
  • Consider the Size of the Panels

Consider the Thickness of the Panel

Acoustic panels come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Therefore, before making a purchase, pay close attention to the size and thickness of the panels. For instance, their consistency will range between 1 inch, two inches, or four inches. Notably, four inches panels are better at absorbing sound compared to other thicknesses. However, this does not necessarily mean you have to always go for the four-inch thickness.

Consider the Pattern for Surface Sculpture

Sound absorption panels can be flat or have a sculpted raised surface. Pyramids, ridges, and egg crates are among the formal elements of these sculpture panels. These carved acoustical panels are typically two inches thick, but their raised sculpted shape provides excellent soundproofing and sound absorption. Therefore, sculpted panels with two inches of thickness may be as effective as a four-inch panel or even more. However, this relies entirely on the application for which acoustic insulation panels are being used and the frequency of the sound waves that are being absorbed.

Check the NRC Rating; Noise Reduction Coefficient

Anytime you buy an acoustic panel, ensure you check for the NRC rating, which ranges from 0-1. Therefore, when you see an NRC value of 0.75, it implies that 75% of the sound that hits the sound-absorbent panel is absorbed. As a result, you’ll only hear around 25% of the residual sound that the sound-absorbent panels haven’t absorbed. Therefore when checking for ratings, ensure you get looser boards to one; the sound will be absorbed better. However, panels with ratings such as 50 and below mean that the amount of sound being absorbed is 50 percent, and you can hear the ret 50 percent, which is a high percentage. Therefore, despite the design or thickness panels with low NRC ratings will give a poor job absorbing noise.

Consider the Size of the Panels

When selecting the most refined sound-absorbing panels, the size and amount of acoustic insulation panels you will receive are essential factors to consider. For instance, to cover large spaces, you will require a lot of large soundproofing panels.

In conclusion, buying sound-absorbing panels is not that third with the above guiding tips. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to the sound-absorbing panel’s size measurements to figure out how big you need the panels to be, the thickness, and also surface they should have. All of these elements will add to the panel’s total sound absorption
