It’s no secret that moving can be challenging, exhausting, stressful and exciting all at the same time. Throw a moving to a new country into the mix and you’ve got a whole different set of processes and procedures to follow to ensure everything goes to plan. It goes without saying that being prepared for your move well in advance is always the best method; therefore, we’ve put together a list of how to make moving overseas easy… well, easier!

Table of Contents

  • Apply for your Visa
  • Find a Good Moving Company
  • Make Copies of Legal Documents
  • Contact your Phone Provider and Bank
  • Research the Culture

Apply for your Visa

One of the most important steps when moving overseas is to apply for your visa well in advance. Depending on what country you’re moving to, there will be different rules and regulations surrounding visas, with some country’s visas being easier to obtain than others. For example, Australians often find it very easy to get their visa approved when moving to the UK, whereas countries like the US prove to be a little more difficult. Of course, if you have a dual citizenship and are already a citizen of the country you’re moving to, you don’t have to worry about this step. The bottom line is to start this process as soon as you know you’re moving to avoid any delays!

Find a Good Moving Company

Perhaps one of the most important steps to making moving overseas easy it to work with a really good international moving company. A moving company that is efficient, experienced and trustworthy will make your international moving process so much easier and alleviate some of your stress. Some key things to look for in a good moving company are:

  • Can they pack your items for you?
  • How much experience do they have?
  • Are they industry accredited?
  • Do they offer a door to door service?
  • Can they store your items for you?
  • Do they move to your country?
  • What are their reviews like?

If you find a moving company that has positive answers to all of the above questions, you’ve found a winner! It’s a good idea to book your move well in advance to ensure your items can arrive at the same time as you.

Moving Overseas Easy

Make Copies of Legal Documents

When moving overseas, it’s inevitable that you’ll be reaching for legal documents to proceed with any necessary formalities. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to have extra copies of these on hand in a dedicated folder so that they can be easily accessed at any stage. Some important documents you might need are your passport, driver’s license, birth certificate, marriage certificate or immunisation records.

Contact your Phone Provider and Bank

Another important step in your overseas moving process is to contact your bank and phone providers so that you’re ready to hit the ground running when you arrive. It is usually suggested that, if possible, you stay with your current bank to maintain your credit score and make direct payments; however, you still need to inform your bank that you’re moving. When it comes to your phone, it’s recommended that you ask your carrier to unlock your phone ahead of your move so that once you arrive, you can purchase a local SIM.

Research the Culture

It will always depend on what country you’re moving to, but sometimes the difference can be a little bit of a culture shock. Generally, if you’re moving from one western country to another, the difference between cultural norms might not be too severe. However, if you’re moving to a country that you know is very different to your current home, it isn’t harmful to do a little bit of research. This will ensure that you avoid any uncomfortable encounters or miscommunication. Of course, in any country with a language barrier this will happen at some stage; however, it is always helpful to do some research and learn about your new home.
