When you decide to build a shed, the materials you choose depend on its intended use, where it is situated in your yard, and the amount you are willing to invest in its construction. A garden shed hidden in the back of the yard, that you won’t spend a lot of time in does not need to sacrifice comfort. First some determining factors should be considered, and then we will discuss the best materials to use for construction.

Determining Factors
- Usage – this will be a major factor in determining the best material to use because machinery storage (lawnmowers, rakes, etc) doesn’t need to factor in airflow, insulation, and light. However, a sewing room will have different needs to a garage workshop.
- Positioning – this part is really about the aesthetics of the structure. Something hidden behind trees doesn’t need to look as pleasing as a shed built prominently near the backdoor. Also, a workshop won’t need as much comfort as a games room.
- Budget – is another major determining factor because of the range of costs in materials, such as with galvanised steel, weatherboard, and checker plate. It can also have an influence on whether you choose to go with a kit-form-shed or you start from scratch.
The Best Construction Materials to Use
Galvanised steel
This will be your cheapest option, but also the less aesthetically pleasing. The galvanised steel can be painted, although it will need special treating before the paint will adhere to the metal.
Zincalume
Another cheaper option, zincalume, comes in a few colours including a plain metal look. In our opinion it is a better choice than the galvanised steel as it lasts longer.
Colourbond
Only slightly more expensive than Zincalume, Colourbond is made from the same material but powder coated, giving it a larger colour range.
Timber/Weatherboard
These are more expensive options, but they are the most aesthetically pleasing. They would make great choices if you are intending to build a shed that you want to spend a deal of time in because they offer greater insulation than the meatal options, such as for an office, a workshop, or games room.
Checker plate
Another way to improve the aesthetics of your shed is to use checker plate. Its unique diamond pattern not only adds style and strength, but it also provides a safe surface with plenty of grip, making it great for flooring, ramps, benchtops, and shelving units.
Selecting the best materials for shed construction depends on how you intend to use it, along with sourcing high quality construction materials to ensure the longevity of your shed.
