I’m sure most people have seen at least one Home Alone movie, but for those that don’t know, it’s well known for the way a streetwise kid defends his home from thieves using ingenious contraptions. If you have time watch the original trailer here. This winter, I’m inviting you to consider using some of that ingenuity in your own home, and although some of these ideas aren’t the most serious home improvement ideas, hopefully they inspire you to think outside of the box when it comes to your home. After all, with the vast array of “smart” products out there nowadays, it’s easy to see how a few individually innocent items could together become a powerful tool for home defence, without detracting from the beauty of your home.
Home Alone 6
Each home security measure will need to be activated, and modern technology makes this far more sophisticated than tying a trip wire to a bucket of marbles. If you’ve been to certain care homes, you will know they have floor mats next to beds, like this one, that alert nurses if a patients falls or gets out of bed in the middle of the night. These could be repurposed to trigger anything from police assistance to a sound clip from Angels With Filthy Souls when someone tries to enter your home. A cheaper alternative would be leaving your kids Lego over the floor, but we’re aiming for a clean look.
Another way of applying some of Kevin McAllister’s ingenuity to your own home would be to set up indoor solar panels, that register when a thieves flashlight shines on it in search for your valuables. You could hook these solar panels up to a door that releases the hounds, or more likely lock all your internal doors, would keep you safe from any unwanted night time visitors, who may have skirted around your police-calling floor mat.
